ScienceOnline2011- Can’t wait!

ScienceOnline2011, the ultimate “un-conference,” begins one week from today.  The event will offer tons of opportunities for discussions centered around topics related to scio11logoscience and the Web.

Robert Krulwich from NPR’s Radio Lab kicks things off with a keynote on Thursday evening. Friday brings Lab and Museum Tours, workshops,  a book fair and happy hour, and group dinners in Durham’s Brightleaf district.  I’ll attend two of the workshops: how to produce a high-quality short video and also a session on Prezi and I look forward to applying what I learn to my everyday work. (look out!)

Sessions begin bright and early Saturday morning and last through Sunday afternoon. I’m especially excited about…

  • Data Discoverability: Institutional Support Strategies – Kiyomi Deards, Molly Keener and Steve Koch
  • Open Notebook Science: pushing data from bench to web service – Jean-Claude Bradley, Carl Boettiger and Antony Williams
  • How is the Web changing the way we identify scientific impact? – Jason Priem, Paul Groth, Martin Fenner, and Jason Hoyt
  • Having fun with citations – Martin Fenner, Melody Dye and Jason Hoyt
  • Web 2.0, public and private spaces in the scientific community, and generational divides in the practice of science – Janet Stemwedel and Helene Andrews-Polymenis

I also have the great honor of participating in a couple of sessions and sharing a bit about the semantic web and VIVO:

  • What’s keeping us from Open Science? Is it the powers the be, or is it … us? – David Dobbs, Melody Dye, Jan Reichelt, Kristi Holmes, John Timmer, Sara Wood
  • Science Online Project Showcase – Karen James, Sophia Collins, Kristi Holmes, Adrian Ebsary

Of course there are tons of other great sessions – as far as I can tell, the only bad thing about the meeting is that there are too many interesting things happening simultaneously.

If you are interested in the conference, but won’t be able to attend in person, follow the livestreaming conference sessions from the conference website or follow along on Twitter at #scio11. Can’t wait!

edit: added link for livestreaming.
